Kaleidopaint – A fun app for making symmetrical drawings.

Just wanted to make a quick post on Kaleidopaint, available on the App Store.

This an an app for making drawings similar to the style of M.C. Escher.  You can choose from a bunch of different symmetry patterns, and then finger paint your way to some great images.

Here are a few examples of things I’v’e created using it.  You’ll recognize the wallpaper pattern from our experimental carving and pattern pillows.  🙂

Being so simple to use is what really makes it a great tool.    It’s possible to undo/redo, change colors, and also just do crazy things until you find something you like.  I’ve even combined this with an intro to laser engraving as a way to get going quickly while encouraging my students to make something of their own instead of going straight to Google Images.

Almost best of all, it’s free.  Give it a try and let us know what you think!
