PLATFORM BED No.1 IN SOLID MAHOGANY by WILBUR DAVIS STUDIOS
Have you searched everywhere for an elegant mahogany platform bed with classic style that is also built to last? Modern platform beds with solid wood construction, created to endure the test of time aren’t easy to find. In our search for a simple, strong, wood bed with a minimal look, we found very few options available. Even the solid wood beds we found on the market had their weaknesses. Many only used thin boards which could flex and wobble. Others were finished with VOCs that lead to poisonous off gassing. Still, other beds used problematic fastening systems that would loosen up at the time. That’s what ultimately inspired Wilbur Davis Studios to design and create Platform Bed No. 1 back in 2012.
Platform Bed No. 1 is simple, elegant, and strong. The 2.75-inch thick square rails give the bed a lightweight appearance while maintaining a completely solid stance. Carefully sculpted tangent legs and headboard detailing give this bed a presence that a mass-produced bed simply cannot match. The headboard center panel floats inside the solid wood frame and allows for seasonal movement without warping or curling.
We’re often asked if this bed can be disassembled. Yes, it does come apart, and ships disassembled. We designed this frame to come apart easily and move without a lot of fuss. Bolt-together assembly is easy, and the result is a strong, beautiful bed with a seamless appearance. For durability, this bed features mortise and tenon joinery in combination with bed bolt hardware. The mortise and tenon is one of the oldest and strongest joints in a woodworking. We use this joinery technique throughout this bed, but many of the joints are permanently glued. The exception to this is the rails. Instead of gluing these in place, we utilize high-quality bed bolts for the 4 points where rails meet the headboard and footboard. These bolts lock the mortise and tenon in place with incredible strength, yet allow for easy disassembly when it’s time to move it. Beds that don’t use bolts can loosen up over time, leading to a permanently wobbly bed. This system of fastening stays perfectly tight and will serve you well for many years to come.
Our bed is built with robust beech slats that nest into pocketed solid beech rails. These slats are always spaced at less than 2″ apart to provide the perfect balance of airflow and support, maximizing the life of your mattress. Beds larger than twin are constructed with a solid beech mid beam and center leg to prevent sagging. The bed is designed for use without a foundation or box spring.
PLEASE NOTE: The bed photographed shows a plywood foundation. All new beds will be produced with a hardwood slat system.
Margie & Stephen –
We’ve been searching for the “perfect” bed frame for the past quarter century (far more impressive than 25 years, right?) We’ve hit every specialty furniture store and crafts fair in New England. We came close a couple of times, but there was always some small detail that didn’t work for us. We first saw Kelly’s & Matthew’s work at a friend’s home and within weeks visited their studio. Following a couple of questions and outlining some particular criteria, we paid our deposit. Literally, this was the fastest decision we’ve made in our marriage – other than my decision to propose after four weeks. As soon as Kelly and Matthew finished installing the frame and we could see it in all it’s glory, surrounded by our furnishings, we knew we’d made the right decision. Trust me, you can’t go wrong. The craftsmanship is exceptional, the materials top-of-the-line, the attention to detail magnificent, and you’ll never work with two nicer, more genuine people.
