PLATFORM BED No.2 STORAGE BED IN EBONIZED BLACK WALNUT by WILBUR DAVIS STUDIOS
This ebonized walnut storage bed was designed for those who want an elegant, modern bed and wish to make efficient use of storage space at the same time.
There is no need to climb on the floor for storage bins here. Instead, the bed provides six dovetailed maple drawers with high-quality, Blum full-extension slides with soft close action. The dovetail is one of the oldest and most reliable joints used in woodworking, and only truly functions in solid wood. These drawers are the very best, and a joy to use. Putting laundry away has never been so pleasurable.
Meanwhile, visually, the square rails give the bed a lightweight appearance while maintaining a completely solid stance. We designed this frame to come apart easily and move without a lot of fuss. Once assembled though, it becomes clear that this is a piece that is here to stay.
For durability, we utilize mortise and tenon joinery in combination with bed bolt hardware. The mortise and tenon is one of the oldest and strongest joints in a woodworking. We use this joinery technique throughout this bed, but many of the joints are permanently glued. The exception to this is the rails. Instead of gluing these in place permanently, we utilize high-quality bed bolts for the 4 points where rails meet head or footboards. These bolts lock the mortise and tenon in place with incredible strength, yet allow for easy disassembly when it’s time to move it. Beds that don’t use bolts can loosen up over time, leading to a permanently wobbly bed. This system of fastening stays perfectly tight and will serve you well for many years to come.
Our beds are built with robust beech slats that nest into pocketed solid beech rails. Beds larger than twin are constructed with a solid beech mid beam and center leg for added support. The bed is designed for use without a foundation or box spring.
